A thyroid radioiodine uptake scan did not reveal any cold or hot nodules. Thyroid ultrasound revealed a thyroid of normal size. Several hypoechoic solid nodules were found and the dominant nodule was sampled by FNA, showing atypical cells, but not demonstrating diagnostic features of papillary carcinoma.
Upon surgical exploration, the mass measured 3 cm and was anatomically separate from the thyroid gland and overlying the cricothyroid membrane and thyroid cartilage. Operative excision of the neck mass was performed. Grossly, it consisted of a soft, tan-gray, smooth, encapsulated mass, measuring 2.7 cm in diameter.
