The patient is a previously term, 5 week old white female born to a 26 year old G3 P1 mother with a history of two prior spontaneous abortions.
She was found to be persistently jaundiced after birth and admitted to an outside hospital. A workup showed iron deposition in the liver and pancreas as well as a markedly elevated serum ferritin, leading to a working diagnosis of neonatal hemochromatosis. At three weeks of age, the baby was transferred to Saint Louis Children's Hospital secondary to fulminant liver failure.
